Finding solutions for banks and insurance companies

DACHSER & KOLB: inform banks

Inform your bank in advance about your move to the US. This will ensure that all relevant account details and information are updated. This will help to avoid any inconvenience or delays in connection with your bank account. To open a US bank account, you will need your passport, visa, Social Security Number, and proof of address.

DACHSER & KOLB: Granting power of attorney to trusted persons

If you are unable to be present during your move to the US, it is advisable to grant power of attorney to trusted individuals. This will allow them to conduct banking transactions on your behalf and ensure that everything runs smoothly.

DACHSER & KOLB: Inform your health insurance provider

Before moving to the US, you should inform your health insurance provider. This is important to ensure that you have adequate insurance coverage abroad. Unlike Germany, the US does not have a public health insurance system. You have the option of obtaining insurance through your employer, a private health insurance provider, or government programs.

DACHSER & KOLB: Review insurance policies

Review your insurance policies. Moving to the US may also affect your existing insurance policies. Be sure to contact your insurance company and inform them of your move. You may need to adjust certain policies or take out new ones to meet your needs in your new country. Liability insurance, for example, is not mandatory, as it is in Germany.

Checklist for immigrants to the USA – Banking & Insurance

Apply for a Social Security Number (SSN) or ITIN; open a US bank account; apply for your first credit card (ideally a secured card); actively build up your credit history; take out health insurance (ideally before you arrive); take out car insurance immediately if you buy a vehicle; check your liability and renters insurance; consider taking out life or disability insurance.

How much does a move to the US cost?

The cost of moving from Germany to the US depends on various factors, such as visas, flights, and the size of the move. Our moving cost calculator calculates the prices for us as a moving company based on the number of people, the previous living space, and the distance to the new place of residence. An exact quote will be provided after a free on-site visit.

What requirements must be met in order to emigrate to the USA?

To emigrate to the USA, you will usually need a visa or a green card. The most common routes are work visas (e.g. H-1B), family reunification, investor visas or winning the green card lottery. In addition, you should have sufficient English language skills, financial resources and a realistic plan.

What do you need to bear in mind when moving from Germany to the US?

As an emigrant to the USA, you can generally import personal effects that have been in your possession for at least one year and are not intended for sale duty-free. This includes clothing, furniture, books, and household appliances. Vehicles may also be imported, but must meet US safety and emissions standards.

Prohibited or strictly regulated items include fresh food, plants, weapons without a permit, and products made from protected animal species. Cash amounts exceeding USD 10,000 must be declared. CBP Form 3299 is required for the import of household goods, and all items should be listed in a detailed inventory.

Tip: Keep receipts for valuable items and consult a customs broker if necessary to facilitate the process.

What insurance is important for expats moving to the USA?

Health insurance is essential, as there is no basic state provision. Car insurance (compulsory in almost all states) and liability and household insurance are also important.

What typical mistakes should expats avoid?

  • Inadequate financial planning
  • Not taking out health insurance
  • Not building up a credit history
  • Underestimating cultural differences
  • Lack of knowledge about visa requirements
