Change of Address After Moving
What deadlines must be met after moving?
Moving marks the start of a new chapter in life, but it also involves a lot of organizational tasks. One of these important tasks is updating your address with the relevant authorities and institutions. In this article, we’d like to explain why updating your address after moving is so important, what deadlines you need to keep in mind, and how you can make the process as smooth as possible.
Why is re-registering your address after a move important?
Re-registering your address after a move is not just a formality; it is required by law. It serves to register your new address with the authorities and ensure that you continue to receive important mail and information. Additionally, it facilitates smooth communication with government agencies, insurance companies, and other institutions. An up-to-date address is also important for voting and paying taxes.
Changing Your Address After a Move: Important Steps
Note the Registration Requirement
Under Section 17 of the Federal Registration Act, you are required to register at your new place of residence within two weeks of moving. This registration requirement applies to all persons aged 16 and older, regardless of whether you are moving within the same city or to a different city.
Contact the Relevant Authority
Registration is usually handled at the Residents’ Registration Office or City Hall in your new city. Check in advance for opening hours and the required documents to make the process as smooth as possible.
Have the required documents ready
To re-register, you will generally need your ID card or passport, as well as a confirmation of residence from your landlord. This confirmation verifies that you are actually living in the new residence. If necessary, you may also need a certificate of residence from your previous place of residence.
Notify other institutions
In addition to re-registering with the Residents’ Registration Office, you should also notify other institutions of your move. These include, for example, insurance companies, banks, employers, telephone and internet providers, and, if applicable, the tax office.
Keep Deadlines in Mind: Re-register After Moving
The legal deadline for re-registering after a move is generally two weeks. It is important to meet this deadline to avoid potential fines. If you re-register late, penalties in the form of fines may be imposed. It is therefore advisable to begin the re-registration process as soon as possible after moving.
