Emigrating to Indonesia: An overview of the political system

Indonesia, the fourth most populous country in the world with around 270 million inhabitants, combines cultural diversity and democratic structures. It is home to the second largest Muslim community in the world and is the third largest democracy. Of the archipelago's more than 17,000 islands, around 6,000 are inhabited. The state doctrine "Pancasila" forms the basis of the constitution, which guarantees religious freedom for six officially recognized religions.

Indonesia has been a presidential republic since independence from the Netherlands in 1945. After the end of the authoritarian "New Order" under Soeharto, the country transformed itself into a stable democracy from 1998 onwards through comprehensive reforms. The president is directly elected every five years; the last election was held on February 14, 2024. According to preliminary results, Subianto Prabowo won the majority with around 58% of the vote.

Indonesia's 38 provinces have varying degrees of autonomy. Of particular note are Aceh, several provinces on New Guinea, the special region of Yogyakarta, which is ruled by a sultan, and the capital Jakarta. Indonesia's diverse culture and history make it an attractive destination for expats and emigrants looking for a new perspective on life in Southeast Asia.

Climate in Indonesia: Important information for emigrants

Indonesia has a tropical climate, which is somewhat moderated by sea winds. The average annual temperature is around 27°C, although there are regional differences: In the coastal regions, temperatures vary between 24 and 35°C, inland between 20 and 30°C and in the mountains between 16 and 26°C. Humidity is generally high, but it often cools down considerably at night in the mountain regions.

The rainy and dry seasons are influenced by the east and west monsoon. The dry season usually lasts from May to September, while the rainy season dominates from October to April with frequent but short and heavy showers. In cities such as Jakarta, the climate remains hot and humid all year round, which should be taken into account when planning for people who want to emigrate to Indonesia.

Healthcare system in Indonesia: Important facts for emigrants

While there are many benefits to emigrating to Indonesia, finding and funding adequate healthcare can be a challenge. Public hospitals are generally not up to the standards that expats from Western countries are used to, making medical care a major planning point for many emigrating to Indonesia. Private hospitals are usually a better choice as they offer a much higher quality of care. However, these advantages are often reflected in higher costs, which can be a burden without adequate cover.

Comprehensive health insurance cover is therefore essential for all expats moving to Indonesia, especially those who are looking at a long-term perspective when emigrating to Indonesia. In major cities such as Jakarta or Denpasar on Bali, there are modern clinics that meet international standards and are therefore an attractive option for people emigrating to Indonesia who value high-quality healthcare.

Emigrating to Indonesia: An overview of the economic situation and quality of life

In Indonesia, the gross domestic product per capita amounted to around 4,980.72 US dollars in 2024. The Gini coefficient of wealth describes the distribution of wealth. The indicator is an established, internationally comparable measure of wealth inequality. It is measured on a scale from zero to one. The higher the value, the greater the inequality. The Gini coefficient in Indonesia is expected to be 0.37 in 2025 (source: Statista).

Indonesia consists of over 17,000 islands, of which around 6,000 are inhabited. For many who wish to emigrate to Indonesia, the country offers a unique blend of cultural diversity and scenic beauty. Despite the overall positive development in recent years, there are still considerable regional differences. The main island of Java is the political and economic center of the Indonesian archipelago. In the past, little was invested in infrastructure, education and basic social security on the other islands. However, this has changed in the last ten years. Nevertheless, the differences in development have not yet been completely eliminated. Emigrating to Indonesia offers the opportunity to experience this dynamic at first hand and to share in the many opportunities the country offers.

Relocation of the capital

Indonesia, the world's largest island nation, is moving its seat of government from Jakarta to Nusantara on Borneo - a forward-looking move that is also of interest to those thinking about emigrating to Indonesia. Jakarta suffers from chronic traffic jams, environmental problems and flooding. In the new capital, these challenges are to be avoided through modern infrastructure and sustainable planning.

Nusantara not only offers better living conditions, but could also make Indonesia even more attractive for expats looking for a fresh start. Emigrating to Indonesia thus combines new opportunities with a place in an innovative urban development project.
