Practical support for hedgehog rescue: Boxes and packing paper for small patients
The Igelhilfeverein e.V. cares for injured, weak and orphaned hedgehogs and helps them on their way back into the wild. DACHSER & KOLB supports the association with boxes and packing paper used in the rescue centre as bedding, sheltered resting places and, in some cases, even winter quarters.
Helping hedgehogs in our region
The Igelhilfeverein e.V. cares for injured, sick, weak and orphaned hedgehogs. At the hedgehog rescue centre in Weiler near Osterberg, injured animals receive first aid and, where necessary, are referred to veterinarians experienced in treating hedgehogs. Orphaned young hedgehogs are hand-reared, weakened animals are nursed back to health, and mothers with their young are taken in when, for example, their nest has been destroyed. Wherever possible, the aim is to release the animals back into the area where they were originally found.
Returning to the original location is not always possible. In these cases, the association looks for natural, hedgehog-friendly gardens where the animals can find a new home. Suitable gardens provide shelter, sufficient space and an environment in which the hedgehogs can settle permanently. Anyone able to offer such a place is welcome to contact the Igelhilfeverein e.V.
Caring for the animals requires considerable time, specialist knowledge and daily attention. The rescue centre also needs suitable premises in which to carry out this work. The association is therefore currently looking for a new building in the surrounding area for its hedgehog rescue centre and welcomes information about suitable premises.

At the hedgehog rescue centre, that protection takes on a very different form. Packing paper is used as fresh bedding in the animals’ enclosures, while boxes become sheltered places to sleep and retreat. Sick, weak or very young hedgehogs need peace and a safe place where they can withdraw. For some animals, a box becomes their own little sleeping shelter for days or weeks – and when a hedgehog needs to overwinter in care, it may even become the place where it spends its hibernation.
